“Why am I an atheist? The short answer is that I cannot accept any of the alternatives. I simply don't find them believable. As for the accusation of intellectual pride, surely the boot is on the other foot. Atheists don't claim to know anything with certainty – it's the believers who know it all.”

    * That sounds scary – who is prohibiting you from elaborating? *

    Scripture and my good sense.

    * So these are all psychological phenomena? *

The ones I gave are. They are the ones due now because they pertain to the war for the mind between good and evil.

    * The difficulty for atheists is that personal experiences of this kind cannot be authenticated *

I know what the difficulty is. You insist that it work your way. It isn`t going to. You can call it authentication. You can call it proof. You can call it evidence. No matter what you call it it is putting the cart before the horse. I give witness and you investigate. That is the way it works. You ask someone to prove God you are in effect asking them to pull God out of their pocket or asking them to order God through flaming hoops. You are looking for the wrong kind of God when you do that.

    * even if they were, it is impossible to determine that they are supernatural in origin. *

All you have to have is for them to happen to you and you will know from where they come. It is a personal experience.

“All you have to have is for them to happen to you and you will know from where they come.”

But how can you know? Aren’t you jumping to conclusions about that?

  3. Thunder Says:

    * But how can you know? *

How can WHO know? By ‘you’ do you mean me or you or we? Would it be more correct for me to read your question as such: ‘But how can one know?’

    * Aren’t you jumping to conclusions about that? *

The simple answer is no. More specifically…… If I obey instruction from scripture and the result is what I am told to expect by scripture it isn`t wrong to conclude that scripture is where it came from. When in scripture Jesus performed a miracle and said your faith hath made you whole….. He certainly isn`t speaking about lack of evidence. He is speaking about trust and expectation.

  4. Hypatia Says:

“If I obey instruction from scripture and the result is what I am told to expect by scripture it isn`t wrong to conclude that scripture is where it came from.”

It isn’t necessarily “wrong to conclude that scripture is where it came from.” but it isn’t necessarily right either.

The fact that you were expecting what happened (“the result is what I am told to expect by scripture”) means the source of your experience is questionable isn’t it?

There is only one conclusion for the one who experiences it.

    * The fact that you were expecting what happened means the source of your experience is questionable isn’t it? *

No. It is just like an experiment. You reproduce the conditions and the result is predictable.

  6. Hypatia Says:

“There is only one conclusion for the one who experiences it.”

Not if you have an open mind.

“No. It is just like an experiment.”

Where the subject is expecting a particular outcome? Any scientist would describe this experiment in one word – flawed!

  7. Thunder Says:

    * Not if you have an open mind. *

It isn`t my mind that is closed.

    * Where the subject is expecting a particular outcome? Any scientist would describe this experiment in one word – flawed! *

Now I know that is not right. Any documentation of experimentation includes the prospective outcome.

  8. Hypatia Says:

“There is only one conclusion for the one who experiences it.”

    Utterly closed.

  9. Thunder Says:

    * Utterly closed. *

That is your ignorance. You don`t know me. Bring something besides your doubt based on nothing. It certainly isn`t based on any knowledge of what you reject. Bring something that is more than retrograde to what I have already handled. I like steak and eggs and you want me to go back to baby food.
