No doubt the Vatican are using every political ploy at their disposal to prevent social policy reforms in Italy. However, they are ultimately doomed to failure. I meet young Italians occasionally through work and they all seem keen to embrace Western European liberalism and see church interference in politics at home as an embarrassment. Unfortunately, there is a generation of politicians that “belong” to the church and who are easily manipulated. However, at some point the political dam will collapse – demographics and political realities cannot be ignored indefinitely.
