“The priests of the different religious sects dread the advance of science as witches do the approach of daylight, and scowl on the fatal harbinger announcing the subdivision of the duperies on which they live.”
Thomas Jefferson1743 – 1826

It’s funny how even 200+ years ago it was commonly recognized that knowledge + inquiry (aka science) was the antithesis of faith. Not surprising – the lessons of the Galileo controversy were well known by Jefferson’s time.

If you consider that all religions start with irrational and unsupportable premises, then build around themselves an infrastructure of apologetics and confabulation to justify those premises and probagate them to their flock it is no surprise that when the rational kid on the sidelines says “look, no clothes” they get spooked.

Isn’t this the same Thomas Jefferson whom the Religious Right count as one of the Founding Fathers who established the USA as a Christian nation?

Faith in God can move a mighty mountain and calm the troubled soul. Faith is a marvelous thing, Oh Lord give me more of it.

No tech, earthquakes and techtonic shift move mountains. The boogeyman doesn’t do it.

Dan? You talk about me and my beliefs, I didn’t think you believed in the Boogyman either.Be sure though , he is real. Call him whatever, hes still the enemy of our souls.

anyone know what duperies means?
October 1st, 2010 at 16:51
tech, you’re not making any sense.
October 1st, 2010 at 16:52
You don’t have to do anything to move a mountain but have faith!?
October 1st, 2010 at 16:54
Then why do we still have war, disease, crime? Surely people invoke faith when they pray for those things to go away.

simon………..” duperies ” are DECEPTIONS, or TRICKERY……….things
that fool you…or dupe you .

If faith could move mountains believers would be throwing mountains at each other. Piffle. Odd how faith only fixes problems that can be fixed by non-magical means.
Jefferson – far more wise than any of the biblical characters plus we know he actually lived and his writings are authentically his own.

@tech He is only as real as you personally make Him out to be.
It cracks me up when churches try to blend science in with their teaching; especially when it comes down to evolution. Evolution destroys the entire first book in the bible, Genesis. If the entire first book is invalid, then what does that say about the rest of the book?
Of course, they take Genesis and twist it around to still fit their story by calling it metaphorical and not literal.. Not what they would have said 120 years ago, that’s for sure.
