“Was there not, in fact, at least an indirect unholy alliance between the traditional anti-Judaism of the Church and modern racial anti-Semitism?”

Are these in fact distinct concepts? Beyond religious bigotry can there be some other cause for one to hate Jews? I think this must be the seed from which other grievances, real and imagined, springs. As Chris Hitchen’s puts it:

“Somebody said that anti-Semitism and Kristallnacht in Germany was the result of ten years of Jew bating. Ten years?! You must be joking! It’s the result of 2,000 years of Christianity, based on one verse of one chapter of St. John’s Gospel, which led to a pogrom after every Easter sermon every year for hundreds of years. Because it claims that the Jews demanded the blood of Christ be on the heads of themselves and all their children to the remotest generation.”

    That’s a good Hitchens quote.

Martin Luther’s anti-Semitism is also very well known, as is the anti-Semitism of not just Germany but the UK and USA as well at the time. So yes, whoever says “that anti-Semitism and Kristallnacht in Germany was the result of ten years of Jew bating” is completely ignorant of the history of Christianity.

Further, I really don’t know what is meant by “racial antisemitism”. Jews are not a distinct “race”. Disappointing to people on both sides, Jews are genetically indistinguishable from the other inhabitants of the Levant.
