9th February 2011

“Over 13 percent of the population is considered 'non-religious,' and this includes millions of atheists, freethinkers, humanists, rationalists, and other citizens. [American Atheists] are committed to the separation of church and state and to equality for non-believers in the political arena. Religious speakers must not continue to be given special privileges.”

President Obama’s recent speeches have an increased number of “God Bless You”s in them. I have no argument with, nor interest in, his personal beliefs, except to wish that he would keep them private. Is he only making those benedictions to win votes from the Religious Right? That goes toward not believing that only 13% of our citizens are rational people, it’s just that many more MUST “Go along to get along” for the survival of their families, as atheists do not receive promotions at work in many towns, and their children are often beaten up at school. Atheists organizations would do better to support motions for Separation of Church and State instead of paying for those billboards poking fun at religion.
