“I do benefits for all religions… I'd hate to blow the hereafter on a technicality.”

As funny as this may appear at first, it actually points to a reality for many church-goers. The only reason they attend Sunday service is fear of what may happen if they don’t. (Catholics used to be told they’d go to hell if they missed Mass on Sunday – and many still believe it.) The same applies to those who are afraid to delve too far into their long-held beliefs. They’re afraid of what they might discover. This type of religion is not based on faith but on fear and guilt – and abuse by those in power.

I take it as just a joke with the possible double meaning of ‘the here after’ being a joke. If Bob Hope took any religion seriously I’d be disappointed, but then he was a generation or so before me.

I’m sorry to say this, Defiant, but it seems that Hope became a roman catholic in his later years (source Wikipedia).
