“Cultural relativists believe that all cultures are equal, that Islam is just another leaf on the tree – and that everybody who says different is a xenophobe or racist.”

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!!!!!

    signed,

    PROUDLY XENOPHOBIC !!!!!
    BLATENTLY RACIST !!!!!

  2. The Heretic Says:

My thoughts exactly. Some cultures are full of stone-age savages that use any excuse to commit murder.

  3. Dan Says:

Agreed. That, and culture and race are definitely not the same thing. Correlated, maybe, but less so these days.

  4. Jeff Says:

All cultures ARE equal – but only through the eyes of Sociology or Anthropology. From the standpoint of the culture in which one lives, a standpoint few (if any) can leave behind, few other cultures are equal. From the normal standpoint, if one is dispassionate and honest enough, some cultures may appear superior – but most will appear inferior, and that is strictly a function of the observer’s human nature. Examined carefully enough, each will have features which may outshine another. Each will have features which most others will consider barbaric. But isn’t that just a function of the human condition, which a cynic such as myself might express as “I’m OK, you, I’m not so sure about”?

Xenophobia and racism are nothing less than a defense mechanism for one’s own society or group. If one considers them as an evolutionary traits, they are quite useful in the defense of a family, clan, or tribe. It is only when we get to the level of the city-state that they become destructive, particularly in the leaders of such, where they manifest as a thirst for power. Think it over.

  5. Dan Says:

    Jeff,
The funny thing is that for the cultures that we are describing – principally Middle Eastern Islamic cultures – the reason that those cultures are inferior is because they are so xenophobic and intolerant, not because we are the xenophobic ones.

But if they turn into an open society that tolerates other cultures than their own, then yes, I would agree with you that their culture is equal to the West’s. But until then…

  6. Jeff Says:

    Dan,

The only disagreement you’ll get from me is this: it is the fundamentalist interpretation of Islam which reinforces the Xenophobia, which is EXACTLY the function of fundamentalism in ANY religion. Islam can be just as tolerant of other religions as any other religion, so long as the majority of its believers have been taught to see beyond themselves, rather than the fundamentalist viewpoint. How long? Got a couple of hundred years? That’s more or less what it took to “civilize” Christianity.

  7. Dan Says:

Islam can be just as tolerant of other religions as any other religion…

Of course it can be. But is it? Only in Western society. In Middle Eastern society, it remains far more intolerant than contemporary Christianity. And some parts of the Middle East remain starkly opposed to tolerance of others.

You are mistaken. When you refer to Islamic fundamentalism you imply that there is another, more moderate Islam. There is not. All Muslims believe that the Qur’an is the perfect literal word of Allah as given to his prophet. There is no room for interpretation or the critical analysis that scholars have used to study other religious texts. . If the Qur’an commands a Muslim to do “X” then he must do “X” to be a good Muslim. Unless, of course , that command is abrogated by a later surah.

So some in the West may like to think that Islam is compatible with our views of tolerance, respect and equality before the law for all persons regardless of gender or sexual orientation and freedom of faith or from faith but even a cursory examination of the Qur’an or Hadiths is enough to demonstrate the naivety of that belief. I don’t think much reading is required before it is apparent that compatibility between Islam and Western culture is an oxymoron.

“So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them.” Qur’an(9:5)

“Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.” Qur’an(9:29)

“O Prophet! strive hard against the unbelievers and the hypocrites and be unyielding to them; and their abode is hell, and evil is the destination.” Qur’an(9:73)

“Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. And those with him are hard (ruthless) against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves” Qur’an(48:29)

    And from the Hadiths

He who makes peace between the people by inventing good information or saying good things, is not a liar.” Bukhari (49:857)

Allah’s Apostle said, “I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah Bukhari (8:387)

“Killing Unbelievers is a small matter to us” Tabari(9:69)

“Fight everyone in the way of Allah and kill those who disbelieve in Allah. Ibn Ishaq(992)

“The Prophet said, ‘War is deceit.” Bukhari(52:269)

Islam is definitely not the “religion of peace” or tolerance. Or truth for that matter. It would take a great imagination to picture an peaceful coexistence between Islamic and Western values
