“Organised religions need hate figures to galvanise the tribal mentality of us versus them, good versus evil. The subject of such hate has historically changed from anti-semitism, to sexism and racism. Now the focus has changed to gays.”

Yesterday’s gay-themed quote seems to have annoyed a few bigots so I thought we’d have a few more of them for a while.

I have to disagree on the focus of the hate being directed towards gays. Although the gay community do get quite a lot of religious hate, laws to protect them are slowly being tightened up. In the UK the focus of religious hate seems to be edging towards Atheism/Secularism, with fairly constant newspaper attacks becoming the norm. The main difference being that Atheism/Secularism have almost no protection laws.

I’m not sure why my quote yesterday was deleted… I was defending the quote, afterall. Care to explain that one, Admin?

  4. Dan Says:

    Sorry, comment yesterday, not quote.

I think it is a gay bashing is a particular feature of protestant evangelicals. What’s amusing is how many of the pulpit thumping bigots turn out to be gay themselves sooner or later.

Sorry Dan, I had to remove your comment because it referred to a comment I deleted. On it’s own it would have made no sense.

i get SO tired of hearing this stuff. in this world , right now,
getting all worked up about gay people is a silly and needless
worry. they’ve always been around, and they’re always
gonna be around………..and the dopey gay bashers are never going to change anything.
i mean to say that there are MUCH larger and more pressing problems in our country, and throughout the world,
    to worry about….and even Hate…..

i have relativly few years left to me and i must say that doesnt bother me at all. after going thru a lifetime of watching
the on-going insanity of human behaviour, i’m ready to get the hell out of here. humans ALWAYS have to have a
boogeyman…..or the monsters under the bed ! and if you’re
    DIFFERENT
(( in our society )) LOOK OUT !!!!! you’ve got a great big
    BULL’S-EYE on your back !!!!!

happy friday the 13th to all !!

Of course religion requires an external other to engender fear, and hence cohesion in the ‘flock’. This is the basis of most racism. Ethnicity is often defined religiously, but to claim uniformity within the group is naiive. Many Jews are not racist, but the state of Israel is the most racist in the world. Many men have doubts about their sexuality but only a few engage in gay bashing. To extend this to all religions is perhaps more a reflection of the authors paranoia (perhaps justified by past experience) than an absolute defning of all religions.
If the religion preaches racism (that one ethnic group has an absolute right to survive at the expense of another) then it is racist – at this stage in the world of conflict only fundamentalist Christianity, Judaism and Islam seem to fit this criteria.
