“My atheism, like that of Spinoza, is true piety towards the universe and denies only gods fashioned by men in their own image, to be servants of their human interests.”

It is the anthropomorphism of the God of Abraham and Isaac, as well as those of all other religions which I’ve managed to study, which lead me to the conclusion that they all originated in the mind of somewhat unimaginative men as an explanation for that which they could not understand.

The strangeness of God, which surpasses understanding, is only a poor reflection of the inability of men to understand the processes of their own minds. There is evil in the world, and it originates in either the insane processes of a poorly functioning mind, or the false conclusions of a deluded one. The good which exists is that of a social animal who has found that altruism is the surest mechanism of social cooperation, and unconsciously breed to reinforce that trait.
