“Scriptures are the product of human hands and hearts, and have been translated and copied for generations upon generations; scholarship clearly shows us that the texts present historical and literary problems that would seem to rule out the possibility that they are perfect books.”

Let’s not equivocate here, Jon. Seem? As literature, an interesting study in period literature (at best) for those that go for that sort of thing. As a divine work, utterly disappointing and thus impossible to rate so highly. The only sense in which the bible is perfect is in it’s nearly perfect absurdity.

Makes me think of Thomas Aquinas’s scholasticism. Perfection is an idealized abstraction, with its existence limited to the minds of unrealistic dreamers (to put it nicely).
