“Being brought up in a patriarchal religion makes a lot of women complicit in their own repression; like a spiritual Stockholm Syndrome.”

    If youre talking about whores, then the above quote might be true.

  2. RJ Says:

    well, what if you’re NOT talking about whores ??

  3. Dan Says:

    It’s clearly talking about some fundamentalist theists. While not universally true, today’s quote is generally accurate I’d say.

    “When people came along and said “um…really, ’cause I personally can’t see how that’s possibly true for a man to emerge alive from inside a great fish” .
    Whats the fuss for;
    Tiny bacteria have been able to live in stomachs for a long time, why can’t a strong huge man live for a matter of days? Don’t tell me its impossible. Have you ever tried? If no then just shut up!

  5. Rambler Says:

    Dan: It’s still true for most of the islamic world, where women are often fevered defenders of the islam, thus becoming complicit in their own systematic repression and devaluation as human beings.

  6. Dan Says:

    Solly,

    “When people came along and said “um…really, ’cause I personally can’t see how that’s possibly true for a man to emerge alive from inside a great fish” .
    Whats the fuss for;

    Yeah, so what that that couldn’t possibly have happened?

    @Rambler,
    Fair point. What I said probably only applies to Christianity, and even then only for modern Christianity in the US and most of Europe.

    Tiny bacteria have been able to live in stomachs for a long time, why can’t a strong huge man live for a matter of days?

    Because bacteria have evolved to live in metazoan guts, such a bacterium may well be a symbiont. Men have not evolved to live in fish guts, such a man would be prey.

  8. Dan Says:

    By all means though Solly, if you want you can prove to us that you could survive for even a day in a stomach-like environment. Just fill a sac with strong acid and get inside.

    Personally I’m sure that it’ll kill you. But you’re always right aren’t you Solomon, so you’ll have no problem proving us all wrong. Be sure to take pictures!

  9. solomon Says:

    If God have proven one can, so the rest of the process is up to him to decide. Its only in your mind you think its impossible. But to God , possible or impossible is out of the question. If he wishes to make anything possible, he have countless ways to do it. Lets take a simple example. Long time ago, one finds it impossible for human to fly But witness it now.

  10. Dan Says:

    Solly,
    Your imaginary friend may have told you that this is possible, but even if your imaginary friend would tell me directly I’d still ask him or her to prove it. I’m just not that gullible.

  11. Atheist MC Says:

    Of course Solly. If God existed, anything would be possible. However as far as we can tell we live in a world where not everything is possible. Some things just aren’t by the laws of physics, in fact it looks exactly like it would were there no God at all. Funny that…

  12. Atheist MC Says:

    And as for the quote, Ithink it is obviously true of Islam and it is true of the zanier “Christian” sects like Mormons. There is a strong cultural pressure for these women to conform and perpetuate their oppression.

  13. Atheist JC Says:

    Women all over the world have to participate in their oppression daily. Applying paint to your face so you’re harassed less? Shaving parts of your body so you’re harassed less? We all make accommodations to get by in this world. Just living in a Patriarchy causes this. Getting rid of religion would get rid of a lot of reasons people have for defending this social order that requires complicity just to get by.

  14. electrabotanical Says:

    Of all the fables Solomon would choose to defend – he thinks that living inside a fish for -was it three days – is possible? It’s an obvious literary twist, a fable and a fiction. That whole book is a comedy and a farce. Including a worldly man being sent on an impossible mission to take god to wacky foreigners, a comedy of errors forcing him to change his mind, sailors who pray (sailors!?) and a weed that grows overnight to shade a man.

    Yes, I’ve studied the book of Job, when I used to hang with Presbyterians. It’s one of the more light-hearted and less serious parts of the babble.***

    ***Not intended to be factually true.

  15. electrabotanical Says:

    It’s a shame that the patriarchal christians crowded out the matriarchal traditions of the world. Actually, its a damned shame that christianity seeks to stamp out all the traditional religions.

    There’s nothing special about a 2000 (or so) year old death cult from a bunch of semi-literate desert dwellers that it should apply around the world, except that it has great marketing. Nobody markets the BS like the Xian church!

  16. Atheist MC Says:

    Women all over the world have to participate in their oppression daily.

    Agreed up to a point. But women outside of religion aren’t so compelled to defend it, and thankfully most of them don’t. The thing about FGM for example is that it is usually women who have themselves been mutilated that insist their daughters or grand daughters go through the same.

    A continuation from yesterday:

    electrabotanical says:

    Just renounce your fantasies at the door, gimme the athiest hand- signal and you’re in!

    Just checking the hand signal. That is a right handed flying fickle finger, presented horizontally instead of vertically, followed by a clockwise rotation of the wrist, right? (sideways, with a twist) Don’t worry, Solly can’t meet the first criteria, so he won’t get in.

  18. electrabotanical Says:

    FGM and male infant circumcision are more alike than most people realize, and it’s often fathers and male doctors who impose infant male circumcision (mothers as well) despite a lack of credible evidence that it does any good and plenty of evidence that it’s harmful. but we want our boys to “look like daddy”

    Also, it’s painful for victims of FGM and circ. victims to acknowledge what they are missing sensitive sexual body parts so it’s easier to devalue the foreskin than to leave it alone.
