“Religion is one lie after another: the lie of original sin, the lie of eternal life, the lie of hell, the lie of answered prayer, the lie that life can have no meaning without religion, the lie that religion is the source of morality, the lie of creationism, the lie of a spy-in-the-sky who hears your every word and reads your every thought. And to this list we must add the lie that it views men and women as equal.”

A very fair summary, delivered without a shred of exaggeration.

  2. Atheist MC Says:

Yep, that pretty much nails it

  3. Jeff Says:

Let’s give that a 9.8, and that’s only because of the Israeli and Pakistani judges politically motivated scores…

  4. solomon Says:

    Yeah…??? Lie..?????

Wait till you all burned in !!HELL!!
Then you can consider what sort of lie it is.

  5. Dan Says:

Oh fun – we get to have Mai Tai’s in Hell again. (!!HELL!! I tell you!)

  6. Rambler Says:

Nothing to add to this one, hit the nail square on the head.

  7. archaeopteryx Says:

You would think that if the stakes are so high and that non-believers would be so severely punished as some believers assert, that an almighty god would have provided better evidence of its requirements.

I have not seen an iota of evidence for religion that would be of a standard required in any criminal trial to sentence an accused person to even a slap on the wrist. It would be laughed out of court. That so many jurists seem to accept such beliefs in their everyday lives is another story and a matter of regret.

  8. R J Says:

i agree with arch……………organized religion and its adherents are really

regrettable. but, once you’ve realized this………..you’re thru wasting

time with it. then the world of ideas and possibilities opens up

before you…..and your mind is able to examine, draw conclusions, and

reject absurdities. underline the word ABLE.

religions depend on the all too common trait of individuals to accept and

cling to even the most OUTLANDISH absurdities !!!!! it’s their way of,

in effect, saying ” the buck stops here.”

science and critical thinking will NEVER indulge in absurd HOGWASH,

and i, for one , am glad of it.

  9. solomon Says:

You are not looking for evidence despite its all around you in abundance. You are looking for denial. You’ll sure be burned in !!HELL!! And bring your friend Dan with his Mai Tai along.

  10. archaeopteryx Says:

You, solomon, are undoubtedly thinking of evidence like famine, plague, disease, parasites, natural disasters and so on. And the fact that countries that have an official religion are usually the worst run and have the least happy populations.

  11. electrabotanical Says:

Somehow this reminds me of a Christopher Hitchens quote. It puts the whole lie into historical perspective:

“We calculate that the human species has been about for 100,000 years. In order to believe the Christian message you have to believe this. For those 100,000 years, people were born, died, usually, many of them in child birth, either the mother or the child. Life expectancy perhaps twenty years, twenty five, died of micro-organisms they didn’t know existed, Genesis doesn’t mention them because the people who write Genesis don’t know there are micro-organisms. Earthquakes would have been terrifying, tsunamis, volcanoes, mysterious events. War and famine superimposed on this, you can all fill out this picture for yourselves, I’m sure. That was our life, for tens of thousands of years, on and on it went. Maybe a gradual upward curve, of a sort. We seem to have made some progress, very painfully, and with infinite suffering and labor. And with our solidarity still in tact. Now here’s what you have to believe, you have to believe that Heaven watched that for 98,000 years. And after 98,000 years decided it may be time to intervene. And the best way of doing that would be to have a filthy human sacrifice in a very remote part of Palestine. And the news of this has still not penetrated to the rest of the world, and I don’t think will be believed when it does, and isn’t believed by me, and can’t be believed by a thinking person.”

  12. electrabotanical Says:

Oh, and Dan and Archeopteryx, I’ll see you guys in hell. I hope it’s plenty hot!! (SNARK)
