Popes also claim that they speak to a god, and the majority of the Western world has, for centuries, accepted this without question. So while it is true that power corrupts, human beings are far too gullible to object, generally speaking that is.

An infallible pope must have some terrible moments when reproducible scientific observations conflict with what he says. But he rationalises it away, I suppose.
