Since we know that many people can argue that the same could be said of atheism (I’m sure someone will be along shortly to remind us), then maybe it’s more accurate that “ideologies” have this potential for disaster, or “dogmas”. Certainly ANY inflexible form of absolutism is more susceptible, and religion is as inflexible as they come. What helped certain atheist societies of the past earn this notoriety WAS their absolutism. Today’s “new atheism” is more properly tempered by non-absolutist concepts like humanism and skepticism, and remains the better alternative.
I can’t think of a religion that has gone right. In this context, I mean a religion that has a god interested enough in its creations to issue them with “moral” codes, to spy on their every action and cause some people to imagine that it is their task to enforce the codes – even for victimless crimes such as eating at the wrong time of day or using contraception in a consensual relationship.
@Edmond
I’m not sure that atheism has ever been dogmatic, rather that certain dogmas (communism for example) have embraced atheism as a way of eliminating the potential competition from religion. That being said, the way the “new atheists” are identifying (in the main) with the liberal agenda is as you say a good safeguard against it “going wrong”.
I’m in agreement with AMC, the same cannot be said of atheism per se, but arguably yes it can be said about communism. While communism is an ideology rooted in Marxism, and Marxism was based on an atheistic distaste for religion, you can’t arrive at Marxism without a rather warped understanding of economics.
Some examples of religious wrongs: Salem Witch Trials, Spanish Inquisition, Catholic Preists and little kids, Taliban stoning rape victims, Mayan human sacrifice, the koolaid incident, Warren Jeffs, and last but not least, the George W Bush presidency.
I’ll tell you one thing about the one true religion. It do not demand proper grammars. Or even proof of it’s veracity. Mostly what it does require is a oozing fear of !!HELL!! that must get rubbed off on anyone who comes in contact with it. Kind of like a parasite or a fungus.
Religion must feed on new victims in order to survive. And when it’s threatened it gets particularly nasty. Look at how Warren Jeffs doubled down on the creepy sex tapes while he was on the run.
Also, any religion that denies women veto power over questions of sex, marriage and children is wrong, very wrong. Unfortunately, a majority of religions contain this feature.
Submission is slavery.
I tell the young ladies, find yourself a nice athiest and settle down. He’ll treat you like a real person.
Warren Jeffs – nothing special. Just the usual Isolation, abuse, violence, threats of hell, uneven power structures, cultural normative sexuality taken to the extreme. It’s kind of like female genital mutilation. Why in the H_E_DOUBLE HOCKEYSTICKS would any mother allow a mob to remove her daughter’s clitoris? At risk of infection, death, permanent suffering or at least lack of pleasure? Because the calculation they make is that it’s better to be a part of the group and get along to go along. Also, if she defends her daughter’s right to sexual wholeness, she would have to admit her own sexual tragedy.
The women are brainwashed, isolated and scared. The powerful men and some of the powerful women are willing to commit horrible acts in order to not be stripped of their status. That’s why they do it. Warren Jeffs is simply a sociopath. I hope his cell mate bubba convinces him of the holey nature of buggery in prison and he finds it impossible to come up with a good arguement against it. It would be sweet revenge for those little raped mormon girls if Jeffs became someone’s bitch. I hope bubba takes pictures.

When has religion gone “right” though?
August 19th, 2011 at 8:44
I think Edmond is correct.

Well, at least we know one thing: A truer sentence has never been uttered by an Archbishop in the history of Christianity!
The biggest irony of all being that it is the primary assumption of all religions where they go so VERY wrong.
