“We are a nation that is unenlightened because of religion. I do believe that. I think that religion stops people from thinking. I think it justifies crazies. I think flying planes into a building was a faith-based initiative.”

Bill Maher quote that ‘I do believe’. I think that he too have some form of faith. See…faith is something that tells us some form of believe exists.

n0m0l0s: most people who post on this site believe in belief, to use Dan Dennett’s phrase. Most of us take the trouble to evaluate which beliefs are well-founded and which are not.
Religious beliefs, though popular, are not well-founded.

@Arch
Dennett didn’t mean “belief in belief” in that way. His point was that some people believe that religious belief is a good thing whether it is justified or not.
nOmOlOs is equivocating. belief in a proposition and belief in fairies are two different concepts. “Faith” is another word the theists abuse in this way.

Mr. Harris’ “The Moral Landscape” cites some research suggesting that some reasons for the US being alone among developed countries in its high level of religiosity: a high correlation between this and economic insecurity (inequality with low mobility) as well as with racism; factors less acute in other similar countries.

If belief in belief makes me religious, I knowing about drugs would make me an addict! LOL
What a stupid idea.

jhm the Sam Harris book is a good one. Have it with me now.
It is funny how n0m0l0s has an almost uncanny ability to get things wrong. I do believe that, but I don’t believe or have beliefs about supernatural creatures ruling the fate of humankind.
As for now I do believe I’ll go and get myself a beer.
