“Britain is exhibit A for the secularization thesis – the idea that modernization and scientific rationality will cause religion to wither and die. That is manifestly false in places such as Africa, India or the Muslim world. Only in Europe does it feel true.”

    oh, who cares.

Well, I’m not seeing a whole lot of scientific advancement coming out of Africa, India or the Muslim world. These places and others demonstrate that you can use the fruits of science and yet be immune to its modernizing influences. You can’t compare Britain to the horn of Africa in any meaningful way, can you? The enlightenment and science certainly seem to have led the way in a lot of places. Show me a place where the enlightenment and scientific progress has taken root and I’ll show you a place that will move inexorably away from religion. Gerson didn’t prove his point.

    captain Z……… i agree !!

    Interesting thought for today’s quote.

There is a strong correlation between modernization (and the growth of cultural pluralism, secularism, etc.) and the withering of religion, just as there has been a correlation between science (and the view that the world is in fact understandable). But how much of that correlation is causation?

Hard to say. But it is persuasive.

Ironically, the secular Europe is dying. Up to their eyeballs in debt and being overrun by Muslims, that are out-procreating them about 5:1. In another generation, maybe two, secular Europe is going to be replaced with Muslim states, just out of shear numbers.

  6. Dan Says:

    The Heretic,
That’s a good point. But I think it more likely that in a generation or two of living in Western Europe, Muslims will themselves secularize a bit. This is what you have with many Muslims living in the US – they’re still religious, but they’re becoming more Westernized as each generation passes.

Of course there’ll still be the occasional wackos though…

Does this give anyone hope: http://www.centerforinquiry.net/isis/

I was not aware that there is a gene for Islam.

  9. Jeff Says:

Sinjin, it does give hope, but unfortunately, it is on a time frame that may not allow for the survival of humanity, when so many are seeking an Islamic bomb. I think with a bit of research, you can find comparable statements issued by the Illuminati and others of the early Enlightenment, just before the Church started bonfires under their feet. How many of the signers of that statement are currently under fatwas?

MC, it’s the same as the one for fundamentalism everywhere – the one that allows for lack of thought…

    Sorry – cynic alert!!!
