“For many decades, Saudi Arabia has used its prodigious profits from oil not just to buy off domestic dissent but to fund the export around the world of one of the most conservative, rigorous and intolerant strains of Islam.”

And we will all pay dearly for it. With friends like these…

  2. Nefari Says:

The proceeds from the oil we buy today are purchasing the will and means to murder our children tomorrow.

  3. Critic Says:

The Saudis have established one of the more “successful” theocratic states. However, their international success is related directly to their control of oil – not their control of god. Their local success is due to collusion with religious leaders to establish and maintain an ignorant and poor second class majority through terror spread by secret and not-so-secret police activities highly motivated by religious dogma.

Another big reason that they are so highly regarded by the US government is that they torture our terrorism suspects for us.

God sure does establish nice governments, doesn’t he?

The west’s oil companies are to blame.
Arabia is dominated by the religion dreamed up by a desert tribalist over thirteen centuries ago. Left to themselves, they would be as backward in technology as they are with human rights. Without the technology of the west, the oil would still be down there–out of sight and out of reach of the Arabs, the Iraqis and the Iranians.

Perhaps Christhinker will leap to the Saudi’s defence? They are, after all, people of the book. Birds of a feather. I’m glad they (the Saudi’s) are constrained by the moderating influence of religion. Wait, what?

But we in North America do the same thing, we pile a bunch of money into our churches and what doesn’t get spend on fat preachers or buying prostitutes or paying out sexual abuse cases is put into missionaries they send over there so they can get there 10% too. It is really just a wave, society flows one way with the disillusionment of it’s delusion, then eventually it will flow the other.
