To paraphrase another quote–It’s a simple matter for a good person to do good things and an evil person to do evil things, but for a good person to do evil things, that takes religion.

I’ll concede Christianity is the PRINCIPAL enemy of moral progress but only on strength of sheer numbers. In terms of the quality of their ideas, Christianity has lots of company.

Sinjin,
Was yours an enumerating of the second sentence in Capt’Z’s comment, or the first? I’m not so sure, based upon their public utterances that any of those you’ve named can actually be called Christians, and I’m sure that at least one was in violation of an oath that he took, “so help me God”.

Yea Jeff my comment today was more the exasperation of a tired Republican, disappointed with the pathetic crop of would be candidates to represent the party. Not that less recent ones impressed me so, rather since Reagan the decline in quality has been like falling off a cliff.
For Republicans I imagine the period to be as difficult as it must have been for Democrats in the aftermath of the JFK assination and prior to Bill Clinton.
Not that Bill Clinton will go down in history on a par with JFK or Reagan but that both Clinton and Obama are likely “well remembered” or “fondly remembered” by history in my opinion.
If the Gallop people were to survey people about how they think Rick Santorum, Michelle Bachmann, Rick Perry, George W Bush will be remembered by history anyone of them would be very lucky to rank as well as LBJ, George McGovern, Mike Dukakis, Jimmy Carter and Al Gore.
