“Violent, irrational, intolerant, allied to racism and tribalism and bigotry, invested in ignorance and hostile to free inquiry, contemptuous of women and coercive toward children: organized religion ought to have a great deal on its conscience.”

Well said, Mr Hitchens, it’s a shame you are no longer with us! I am mystified how the poisonous waste of organised religion has been allowed to corrupt society for so long.

    RIP my friend.

It would be nice of one of our religious people to both acknowledge Mr. Hitchen’s quotation, its validity and accuracy, and then also admit that belief in God is a crapshoot at best for them. That they don’t genuinely believe it is anything more than the fantasies of some ancients, an attempt to consol the fearful among them. Admit they are hopeful, they want to believe, but in the end they don’t really think God is there.

The history of religion is marked by the pillars of religion expressing doubt, from Jesus to Mother Teresa, just once I’d like the ordinary religious person to fess up, to admit they aren’t as confident as they say they are.

Rather than endlessly making poor arguments, providing coincidence as example, and dismissing obvious failings as unimportant.

How many more times would we need to hear of clergy sex abuse before it isn’t just a few bad apples?
