“The United States of America have exhibited, perhaps, the first example of governments erected on the simple principles of nature; and if men are now sufficiently enlightened to disabuse themselves of artifice, imposture, hypocrisy, and superstition, they will consider this event as an era in their history. Although the detail of the formation of the American governments is at present little known or regarded either in Europe or in America, it may hereafter become an object of curiosity. It will never be pretended that any persons employed in that service had interviews with the gods, or were in any degree under the influence of Heaven, more than those at work upon ships or houses, or laboring in merchandise or agriculture; it will forever be acknowledged that these governments were contrived merely by the use of reason and the senses.”

What difference is made by a word: Natural and supernatural. Natural being something we can all observe, identify with, and share. Supernatural being muddied by intrepretation, emotion, and motivation.

Natural : No clever or cunning devices, no pretending to be someone else in order to deceive others, no claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one’s own behavior does not conform, no belief in and reverence for supernatural beings.

Natural: The use of reason to analyze human nature, both social and personal, and deduce binding rules of moral behavior.

Natural: Morality is a function of human nature and reason can discover valid moral principles by looking at the nature of humanity in society.

Natural: A system of right or justice held to be common to all humans and derived from nature rather than from the rules of society.

Lends an alternative take on so-called American imperialism. If we follow the Declaration, and the Constitution, if we depend upon reason and natural law we can not be American imperialists, we can only be exemplars of natural law/ a beacon of hope for humanity.

If we wrap ourselves up in supernaturalisms, faith, dogma we aren’t Americans or if we pretend we are, we aren’t any different than any other theocracy. Theocratic imperialism is what it has always been since the dawn of faith: The worst humanity has to offer.

This nation was founded on reason, not religion. See John Adams for further details.

One nation “of the people”, with liberty and justice, for all people everywhere.
