“At no point in human history have our societies cared more for the frail and poor and harbored a detestation for slavery and oppression than in our current era. In fact this progress over time sharply correlates with the diminishing role of religious institutions in our lives.”

Reads like something Steven Pinker would write about.

  2. Bruce Williams Says:

I’ve been checking my Bible for a passage that says: “Slaveholders, free your slaves, pay them for past labor and help them assimilate into society.” So far no luck.

    Good one Bruce.
Ironically while some/perhaps many care more, more are suffering and enslaved than ever before in human history. Caring is disconnected from facts on the ground, and the disconnect between intentions, policy, and practice, the present and future dire impacts of what can only be seen as sequestered tunnel vision or voluntary ignorance is astounding. While people wale and struggle with important but ultimately minor injustices, big picture catastrophic environmental, population and economic imbalances mount unaddressed.

Jesus Himself was not against slavery. I’ve heard pastors try to make the ‘argument’ that slavery then was more like having an employee. Well, sure. An employee you own, can beat, or sell to someone else. An employee you can force to breed with another of your employees. Sounds great. Totally benign. Sign me up.

  5. Jeff Says:

Nope, CZ, forcing ’em to breed on another employee is wasteful, sir. Wasn’t it Isaac and Ishmael who showed that it was far more fun to breed ’em yourself rather than purchase for breeding?

Besides, can anyone tell me what a good daughter is worth these days? I’m a bit short this month…

Frail and poor – yea – we have people who will commit suicide over gossip now a days. We have healthy young men who only know how to play video games – having never performed a days work and young women who know more about cooking meth and mixing cocktails than cooking dinner. And that is in the Amish community!

Depends Jeff, does she have the desired “All American” look – blonde hair blue eyes, pale, but sunkissed tan skin?
