“Fully 55% of the country, according to a recent survey by the First Amendment Center, believes that the U.S. Constitution establishes us as a 'Christian nation.' Worse still, while nearly all Americans say freedom of religion is important, only 56% think it should apply to all religious groups. The truth is that the Constitution says nothing about God. Not one word.”

Most people believe what they want, regardless of the truth of it (myself included, according to my wife).

I think what people mean is that when the country was created, regardless of wording in the Constitution or other documents, it had a Judeo-Christian culture. It did – and still does in many respects. That is not a bad thing. It gives us a basic morality that our laws are centered around, something in common if-you-will, and many colorful traditions that go with that culture.

This is not a bad thing – the Judeo-Christian culture has always had a strong work ethic. That is what made America a first rate power and economic leader in the world. Now people are trying to destroy the culture and traditions of this great country in the name of European socialism (which is bankrupting Europe) and relativism. When the founders set up the Constitution, they made a point to say that there should be Freedom of Religion, which also includes freedom from religion. They did not intend that those who don’t subscribe to religion change the fabric of the nation because they think they ought to. This mentality has been very destructive.

America, for all intents and purposes, is in social bankruptcy and headed for fiscal bankruptcy. Good work by all of you who thought that fundamentally changing this nation was a good idea. Hope you like living in the third world, because that is what you will achieved in (I predict) less than a decade. Even better (worse) all the crap that you thought was sooooo important (religious liberty, reproductive rights, gay marriage…..) that will all be a footnote in history, because that probably won’t exist either. Talk about cutting off one’s nose to spite its face. You took the country with the most freedom and presperity and disemboweled it.

Our Constitution, once a great document, has been destroyed by all those short-sighted idiots who couldn’t hold a candle to the intellects and experience that wrote it.

i completely agree with your last sentence. things have gotten SO

out of hand. intellect has become almost an ”endangered

    species.”

it really breaks my heart to look around me and see seemingly

endless stupidity and short-sightedness and self-centeredness.

im in my mid 60s, and so for me there’s more behind than ahead….

and im really GLAD. i am sick of humans and will be delighted

    to have done with them.

I’ll have to find my copy and reread it, I could swear the Constitution mentions a creator but I may be thinking of the Declaration of Independence which didn’t have it in it’s original draft as I recall.

Heritic, I think you’ve gone off the rails on a tangent here completely, mistaking the greedy capitalism and it’s monopolizing greed for power that is taking Europe and the US down. A typical case of mistaking progress on cures for the disease. The US has been a goal but never a realized one with many scapegoated and enslaved without voices to vent their discontent to the privileged class. Built on slavery that’s never ended, genocide, and invasive and colonial war profits. With the myth of judeo-christian ‘morals’ and ‘work ethic’ leading deluded people by the nose to support the iron lash of profit and loss, prosperity and austerity to keep bankers happy.

  5. The Heretic Says:

DNB – you have lost your mind. Capitalism = Freedom. Socialism = Slavery. Capitalism is the ability to succeed or fail. Socialism is the ability to wallow in the same depth of poverty that everyone else shares (except the privileged few, i.e., gov’t). You just need to look EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD to know that this is true.

  6. Bruce Williams Says:

The founding fathers were Deists, believing that God created the earth and then stepped back. They did not believe in a Christian god who intervenes in our daily lives. For example:
“I have recently been examining all the known superstitions of the world, and I do not find in our particular superstition (Christianity) one redeeming feature. They are all alike founded upon fables and mythologies. The Christian God is a being of terrific character — cruel, vindictive, capricious, and unjust…”
    — Thomas Jefferson
Google quotes for Washington, Adams, Jefferson if you would like to see many more.
Defiantnonbeliever: A Creator does not imply Christ and I suspect Jefferson included the reference to a Creator to appeal to the masses without directly contradicting Christians.

  7. Bruce Williams Says:

    Another relevant quote:
The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the Supreme Being as his father, in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter. [Thomas Jefferson, letter to John Adams, April 11, 1823, quoted from James A. Haught, “Breaking the Last Taboo” (1996)]

  8. Dan Says:

    TH,
Actually, nowadays, Capitalism is slavery to corporations while yes Socialism is slavery to government. Either way, unless you come from a powerful family to begin with, you’re (probably) screwed.

With the gap widening between the ultra wealthy and everyone else, the share left for everyone else is shrinking. We’re slaves to wealth now, not to government.

  9. Defiantnonbeliever Says:

Heritic, have you been drinking ron paul’s kool-aid? Capitalism is freedom only for oligarchs and slavery for the rest. http://www.seesharppress.com/freedom.html
I look around the world and see far happier people where social infrastructures are in place to make sure people aren’t left behind and forced to take whatever slave job is offered. They get health care, education, and training to have the means to earn good livings in countries where law and justice isn’t for sale. Look to most of the other 1st world countries, they know more freedom responsibility for the future than the US does. The moral decline in the country is at the top where the oligarchs know no depth of horror or disregard for people and the planet to which they wouldn’t stoop for profit. The species is at grave risk because of their irresponsibility and blind greed. There is no freedom for the extinct. http://www.alternet.org/tea-party-and-right/ron-pauls-farewell-speech-congress-lays-bare-his-hatred-pure-democracy-and-love?paging=off
