“The irrationality we see on today's political scene, as exemplified by the Tea Party, is fuelled by the irrationality of religion.”

People are literally trained since childhood to reject logic in favor of dogma and wishful thinking.

  2. The Heretic Says:

Well that is absolute BULL$#IT. The Tea Party is motivated by the Constititution and the reinstatement therein. Nothing more. Anything else attributed to them is lies and demonization. The propaganda of the left never ceases to amaze me. But, as uninformed as the masses are in the US, they will believe anything. I guess if you swallow bull$#it for long enough, you learn to like the flavor.

well, if the pope doesnt say that, he says something real similar.

i think the pope and all his pals are on borrowed time. one day,

probably not in my lifetime, people are gonna wake up to reality,

and give up on religion for good. it wont come all at once because

religion is still so effective in controlling….and also people enjoy

having their religious rabitt’s foot in the fact of certainty of death.

but i think it WILL happen.

yeah, i agree with you: the pope and his pals are whistling past the graveyard.

thanks always for your contributions !!

  4. Bruce Williams Says:

Heretic, Would the Tea Party embrace a Muslim or Jew or Atheist candidate? Would Michelle Bachmann or Rick Santorum want to impose Christianity on the nation? Would that be good for a Heretic?

  5. The Heretic Says:

Being a theist has nothing to do with wishing to affirm the Constitution and having some fiscal sanity. If you recall, the Tea Party initially rose up against George W Bush and the stimulus spending that ensued. Again, it has nothing to do with religion. They aren’t bigots or racists.

And as an aside, I wouldn’t vote for a Muslim if he was the last soul on the planet. That particular brand of cult is much worse that the rest.

  6. Freddieja Says:

atheism is too often linked with liberalism. many people can confront the lies of religion but are not able to confront the lies of socialism.

  7. Capt'Z Says:

    Heretic –

Then why do all the teabaggers embrace socially conservative positions? Why are so many of them obsessed with the president’s birth certificate? I’m all for constitutionally constrained government but these guys are American Taliban and bigots. They are the tools of the far right and there’s nothing grass roots about them and their silly hats and costumes.

Case in point – Freedom Works, a ponzi scheme and money laundering operation giving 8 million to it’s departing head, establishment figure Dick Armey. They get 90% of their funding from the very wealthy and from big business whose goal is to create a political system in which they get preferences. They could give a fuck less about ‘reestablishing the constitution’, whatever THAT means. And they support social conservative fuck-tards to obscure their real aims. Just for fun, I went to their issues page and their issues do NOT revolve around constitutional questions but seem rather financial/political.

Last time I looked, the major recent hits the constitution took were to our civil rights in the form of warrant-less wiretapping, countenancing torture and the DHS. I just don’t hear teabaggers railing against THESE encroachments. They’d prefer to talk about gay marriage, the ‘war of Christmas’ or hold yet another symbolic vote to ‘repeal Obamacare’, as if they could actually do that on their own.

The concept of trying to live by the Constitution sounds warm and fuzzy but in reality this goal falls down and has to be modified because the reality is we live in a different time than the framers and they could not and did not anticipate what our lives and world are like today. Hell, are so-called ‘strict constructionists’ in favor of bringing back slavery and the 3/5 compromise? Are those that think the Constitution was frozen in amber on the day it was signed against women’s suffrage?

Society changes and if our interpretations of the Constitution don’t change with it, it becomes useless baggage to us.

But for the sake or argument, what part of the Constitution that was apparently abolished do you want to see reinstated?

  8. Kittie Says:

I went to the local gathering of the tea bag party when it was forming in my area. Old white men who waxed on about putting prayer back in public school. I walked out and have never been back. I haven’t heard about them being up to much around here lately. They kind of lost their steam after the 2010 elections.

Libertarians are going to be the future…

  9. The Heretic Says:

All of you that call Tea Party members tea baggers have no class and are crude asses. The only way you argue against what they stand for is to unfairly demean them. You disgust me. You are loathesome and not even worth talking you. If you don’t know how our Constitution is being undermined, then you probably ought to go take a basic civics class. It is people of your ilk that are destroying this nation both fiscally and socially.

As for Libertarians, they are at the heart of the Tea Party movement. Many Republicans are leaning that way because the Republican Party has turned into a just a slightly less socialist wing of the Democrat party. There is huge rebellion brewing within the party against ‘establishment’ parts of it.

Capt. Z I have lost respect for you across the board.

  10. Bruce Williams Says:

Heretic, I havn’t lost respect for you even though I am diametrically opposed to your political position. Name calling and personal attacks serve no purpose except to alienate people.

  11. Capt'Z Says:

    Well Heretic,
Sorry to read that. I notice, though, that you didn’t say what part of the Constitution that was apparently abolished and that you want to see reinstated.

And, BTW, it was the Teabaggers THEMSELVES that used that term to describe themselves. It was ironically funny that they didn’t know it was also used for a sex act. I’ll grant you the joke is kinda old now.

Tip: Take yourself a lot less seriously. You come across like a grumpy old fart who can dish it out but can’t take it.

Like Bruce, I still respect you despite our difference of opinion. But if you are blind to the christian-right/plutocrat character of the Tea Party, you really are blind, in my opinion.

well, i guess we’re all aware of the anniversary jan 10

maintain a dry eye in looking back…and then seeing the

wonderful progress that has led to this historic day. as i i doff

my hat in honor of those before me….and in hopes of those to come,

and salute with a humble heart those who have already given their

best …………i can only cling to one gratifying thought…..

  13. The Heretic Says:

Let us see – what in the Constitution is currently under attack? The 1st Amendment, the 2nd Amendment, the 10th Amendment. Our country is headed for insolvency and becoming a welfare state. Our foreign policy is in dangerous shambles. The military is being undermined and dangerously underfunded – in a world that is growing exponentially dangerous. (Rise of China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, and the Islamist middle east.)

The government has now usurped the authority of the individual telling us : what light bulbs to use, what toilets to buy, what cars should be allowed on the road with a certain gas mileage, what you can do in your car (talk on phone, eat), you cannot smoke anywhere, you cannot ride a bike without a helmet, you cannot ride in the back of a truck, WHAT HAPPENED TO FREEDOM?

Freedom includes the rights to be reckless, stupid, hurt yourself, starve yourself and die. It also affords you the right to succeed above your wildest dreams and the live the life you want to live, without the interference of big brother. I am waiting for the mandate of wearing a helmet to go to the bathroom. You might fall off and hurt yourself. Wouldn’t want that – let’s make a law. CAFE standards have killed millions of people by promoting smaller, more dangerous cars. The banning of DDT kills millions of people worldwide every year (Malaria and other assorted insect-borne diseases.) You could drink DDT and it would not hurt you. The EPA is destroying the economy, the energy industry, and destroying freedom every time it turns around.

Is the only right that you are concerned about the right to avoid religion? How about the rest of them that are dissolving in front of our eyes? They are doing things through regulation so that they can go around Congress. This administration has usurped untold power through regulations and czars – who are not answerable to anyone. You complain about the Patriot Acts? Obama hasn’t taken any of this away. He has cemented it and gone further.

And as for name calling – when you call me a tea bagger, I will be equally uncivil. And no, the Tea Party did not come up with the name – Bill Maher did.

  14. Dan Says:

“The 1st Amendment, the 2nd Amendment, the 10th Amendment.”

What a stupid canard! No one but perhaps a few lunatics on the fringes is even suggesting that any of them should be threatened.

    Try again TH.

  15. reetBob Says:

TH, you talk about your loss of rights, perhaps some people care more about their right to not be killed by a driver using their phone or eating.

With rights come responsibilities, we have a responsibility to care for the planet, we’re living through a mass extinction event caused by humans and our reckless consumption of energy is triggering massive climactic changes. Most of your ‘rights’ can be rephrased as the right to risk the lives of others or the right to damage the planet.
