“Fundamentalist discourses sometimes place women on a pedestal as 'treasured gifts from God' and give special attention to female roles. However, this is not used to support women's access to human rights but to reinforce the need for women to remain limited to their patriarchally-defined domestic roles.”

Cassandra is correct, of course, but given the nature of the control mechanisms of a patriarchal society, which are currently breaking down under the pressure of the human rights movement, it will be a long time before someone does not threaten her for her ocular activities. Whatever the reason given for the “special” place of women in society, it is strictly a cover for the maintenance of societal control.
