“We cannot give religion so much unwarranted privilege that it is treated as
a special category, in which the pronouncements of faith may not be
contradicted at all, in even the mildest, politest manner, by a science
teacher.”

P. Z. Myers

P.Z. Myers, or, as Sam Harris calls him, the Shepherd of Trolls.

  2. Collin Says:

Religion does not have such a privilege, but the 1st Amendment does. And it is the 1st Amendment, not the words of an anti-politeness activist like P.Z. Myers, that is effectively denying religion that privilege.

Besides which, most religious people don’t even want such a privilege.

The first amendment does NO SUCH THING. The first amendment protects their right to say any stupid thing they want to, but it also protects my right to say that what they’ve just said is stupid. They want the privilege to say stupid things and not have anyone be able to say that they’re saying stupid things, simply because they’re saying stupid things in the name of their religion.

Stupid is stupid, no matter what its motivation.
