    Agreed. And it still goes on today. Atheists are unwelcome in the public arena. Politically it is nearly impossible unless an atheist lies about his/her atheism. I venture that many do. The age old tripe that atheists cannot possibly be moral without religion. Or my other favorite, all the major evil in the world has been caused by atheists: Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot…… (I leave out Hitler because he was, in fact, a Catholic.) Theist intolerance is from ignorance and bigotry…and they have brought it on themselves.

    Religion is losing its privileged position, where it has been free from criticism, taxes, and criminal liability. That’s no more of an attack than what each of us endures in our lives. So, the corre quote would’ve been: “If the religious community now feels itself to be under attack, it’s because *they’re delusional*.
