“Why all the fuss over Scientology, when resources and time might better be directed at the finances, earthly corruption, and raw power of, say, the Catholic Church, an institution that wields influence incalculably greater than Hubbard's itty-bitty religion?”

Because the Catholic church doesn’t have an army of lawyers ready to sue practically any entity that says anything remotely unflattering about about the church.

Also, one can pick up the central text of Catholicism for study at any bookshop, whereas Scientology literature is a closely held secret guarded by even more lawyers. It’s hard to know what’s really going on in Scientology. At least from what I hear.

It’s a wonder to me why more time and money isn’t spent on examining the Mormons. After all, one of the major party candidates for President was a former Mormon bishop! They’re almost as touchy as the Scientologists, and a whole lot bigger…

To see what a charlatan Joseph Smith was, read
No Man Knows My History: The Life of Joseph Smith by Fawn M. Brodie (Aug 1, 1995). Smith made the whole thing up and now ten million people (or more) all around the world, believe it and STUDY the Book of Mormon.
