“Being an atheist I see religion as something which is wholly defined by what people choose to do with it, and most often they choose to be irrational in ways that harm other people.”

Once again, Anon is right on. I know believing christians that I love very much and who I see walk the talk. These are people whose faith informs their actions and they demonstrate love to their fellow man in the best sense. It’s disappointing that my dear friends seem to be so much in the minority. For most christians the motto seems to be “who would Jesus hate?”

Right on what? The long Anon. quote is all over the map, and challenges intelligent analysis. It’s fraught with disparaging generalizations which convey Anon’s anger but which serve no constructive purpose. I respect evidence-based scholarly analysis, not talk-show rhetoric. Some specfic examples of “most often,” “irrational,” and “harm” would have been helpful.

Right off the top of my head:

    1. Catholic reaction to the Holocaust.
    2. Islamic reaction to anything that contradicts Islam.
    3. Evangelical reaction to anything that contradicts their version of Christianity.

I can get even more specific, but, damn, what do you need?

Problems regarding Anon. quote of 11/4/13:
I believe an atheist does not hold value judgements on his/her belief. Religion should not be held as valuable or not valuable due to whether it be good or bad results for human beings: Being an atheist is the advocation of rational belief and that is no way to justify the existence of a supernatural power who interacts with human beings. Advocation of a rational system of thought is the important factor; whether it be harmful or helpful for human beings is irrelevant. It ultimately be helpful, as quest for truth remains the supreme goal.

Jeff: “Damn” is a term of theistic origin, but I suppose it works. Your blanket use of “anything” also diminishes the credibility of your analyses. :~]

That guy, “Anon” comes up with some good ones. He is right on the mark with this one. Thanx CaptZ for your thoughts. YOU are always right on too!
