“It has become clear in the last several years that the aim is not just to stop abortion. If that were the aim, then anti-abortion activists would do much better if they vigorously promoted contraceptives, handed out sex toys, and recommended a variety of imaginative non-coital practices that produce glorious sensations, but do not result in pregnancies. Instead the aim is to infuse with shame all sexual expression and experience outside of heterosexual marriage.”

I always get raked over the coals by foam-mouthed fanatics when I suggest that there is more going on here than regulating abortions. Most people, many of whom profess to be pro-life, do not wish to see abortion made illegal. They just don’t want to see it happening with less frequency, nor do they wish to see it done late-term. There are fanatics, but they appear on both sides of the argument.

Abortion is a symptom of the breakdown of society and the nuclear family. Personally, I like Heinlein’s take on family. Throw as many people as you want to into it, as long as the children are raised and taken care of – all is well. But we are not seeing that. Some minority communities are 70% fatherless. That is a huge breakdown economically and culturally. You see that breakdown all around you with the absence of common courtesy and the rise of crime and drug use. The government and its subsidies are a poor substitute for the father figure.

Abortion is merely a symptom, it is time we address the real problem, the breakdown of our culture that destroys the fabric of the family and would hold life in such low esteem.

Frank Schaeffer’s book, Crazy for God is an incredibly frank presentation of how he and his father, Francis Schaeffer wove the abortion issue into the fundamentalist Christian movement. He has almost completely reversed his position and TAKES RESPONSIBILITY for the harm that he did! Crazy for God is the second book of a trilogy, but the best of the three in my opinion.

I read this book because of the posting here in QOTD on 17 Nov.
