“As a religion, which seeks to instruct its own adherents, the Catholic Church is entitled to do as it pleases… On the other hand, as a political ideology that seeks to impose its most fanatical and potentially lethal ideas on non-believers, often clandestinely through hospital bylaws, Catholic extremism should be resisted as fiercely at home as we oppose the Taliban abroad.”

The Vatican has always been a political entity. Thank FSM that it doesn’t have the same power in recent centuries that Islam has today – nor the destructive bent. I wonder though, as Islam builds power across the world, will the Vatican more forcefully assert itself as a counterbalance? Non-believers aren’t providing any pushback to Islam at all. We are acting as the relativist Neville Chamberlains in this standoff. It is not realistic to think that the turf war will just be Islam v. Christians – Islam hates atheists even more than they do Christians. We are not a organized group and that might end up serving us poorly.
