    President Madison (although I believe this quote to predate his presidency) is, as usual on this subject, the clearest of the founders. He was PERFECTLY aware of the difference between “establishment of religion” and “establishment of a religion”, knew which was in the first amendment (the former version, not the latter) and it is truly a shame that SCOTUS has lost the thread on this. Of course, it doesn’t help that not a single one is an atheist.
