“Those of us who aren't religious conservatives have had to fight every step of the way to create this modern, tolerant, secular Britain, and it's easy to forget that many of the improvements are very recent. I can just remember the last hangings in British prisons, as well as a time when having an 'illegitimate' baby brought shame on a woman and homosexuality was still illegal.”

Although we have come a long way in the development of our “modern, tolerant [and] secular” society the feared implication of Smith’s statement is to think we have come a long way in a short period of time, let’s just keep calmly moving along. Alas, hard to fathom that religious conservatives one time tolerated that women cannot become priests, legal marriages of gays in the entire U.S. is a constitutional issue, people are slaughtered for expressing themselves openly in Paris…Oh Wait, These are going on today. My fault.
