John Sutton there are several problems with that statement.
Let me just mention the whole eating the apple, talking snake, and so forth. If one abandons the old testament completely the whole point of Jesus coming to safe us is incomplete.
You need Adam and Eve to be true, understanding the bible not literally will make everyone the same, from David Koresh to me, you and Jesus. Reading the bible becomes irrelevant while interpreting it (which is something no one escapes from because of how it is written, plus lets start with the fact that there are versions of it).

John - that was really very funny! Oh those Christians! I don’t doubt you’re correct in what you say. If there weren’t any *actual* miracles and it was all just metaphors then what is the point of continuing to insist on this bastards divinity?!?

1. If Jesus was divine, he would have performed miracles.
2. Jesus did not perform miracles.
3. Therefore Jesus was not divine.
4. Therefore priests are twats.

Not true, some bible-believers were very happy about it because they felt it addressed some criticisms that the church was feeling at the time. From what I recall, one of the main ones was “If god created all men in his own image, why are there such variations?”. Of course, it was re-interrupted to be the method god choose to guide the creation of man.

Many contemporary theologians have already dealt with this interpretation. They say thy do not recognise it as part of their religion. The old testament is being quietly abandoned and many of the Jesus stories have become metaphors. For example, I have read recently that the story of big J curing the blind is really about someone seeing the truth whereas before he was blind to it. Likewise, the sermon on the mount, water into wine and even the resurrection have been given sensible, metaphorical interpretations by various clergy.
Yes, they are being deceitful in denying that christian teachers have, until very recently, promoted a literal view of these stories but I cannot help thinking that it is a sign that we are winning the argument - and after all they are only lying for Jesus.

But allow me to divert attention to something that I was expecting to see today, which is 1 July 1858, because 150 years ago joint papers were read at the Linnaen Society, viz.
the Alfred Russell Wallace and Charles Darwin papers entitled respectively
On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties; and
On the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection.

They attracted only specialist attention at the time, but were to lead in to Darwin’s powerfully-detailed scientific work which the obstinate bible-believers hated at once: “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life”, published on 24 November 1859,
