Though a Deist, Voltaire was highly talented, intelligent and anti-‘much of what religion stands for’.
This statement simply nails it. It is truth, through and through.

Not, apparently, an uncommon sentiment of the time. What happened?!?
As I understand the Christian religion, it was, and is, a revelation. But how has it happened that millions of fables, tales, legends, have been blended with both Jewish and Christian revelation that have made them the most bloody religion that ever existed?

I can understand Voltaire’s deism at the time, because they really didn’t have theories like big bang and evolution that we have today that explain things better than a deity could. Voltaire hit the nail on the head with this one, for sure!

Did Voltaire know much about Islam? Or by “the world” did he mean “the western world”?
Islam has a case to answer, in being as bloody—and overloaded with absurdities.
