“There is really no necessary connection between contemporary civilised values and sacrificial religious doctrines originating in the Middle East. The primitive sacrificial element which was brutally emphasised by Christ's crucifixion, is clearly indicated by the earlier compulsion of Abraham to make a blood sacrifice of his son to Jehovah. Modern civilised values have an earlier origin in pre-Christian thought in ancient Greece and the principle of Confucius 500 years earlier, that what you do not like done to yourself, do not to others.”
