“You find as you look around the world that every single bit of progress in humane feeling, every improvement in the criminal law, every step toward the diminution of war, every step toward better treatment of the coloured races, or every mitigation of slavery, every moral progress that there has been in the world, has been consistently opposed by the organized churches of the world. I say quite deliberately that the Christian religion, as organized in its churches, has been and still is the principal enemy of moral progress in the world.”

Bertrand Russell1872 – 1970

    I disagree with this statement.
I agree religion is harmful, and in the case of middle eastern religion, deadly. However, most preachers in the UK and the US really do care about their congregations and try to do the right thing by them. I think it’s more a case of customer service, as they look upon their church as a business and you must keep the customer happy if you want to stay in business.

The argument for “Is there a god” is moot, as god has never hurt anyone per se, since he is invisible. It is man conflicting the damage, using the name god and the sanctity of religion as home base. I have no argument with god, my argument is with organized religion. God is merely the talisman!

    Matthew 6:5-6

  2. Phil The Humanist Says:

I fully agree with Russell (what rational person could not?) But I think Atheist Advocate agrees with him too.
You say that you disagree with the statement, but then go on to say that the problem is not with god (whom Russell does not mention) but with organised religion – which is exactly what Russell is saying.
His problem was with the organised church.
Anywya, it is hard to have a problem with someone/thing that doesn’t exist. My problem is also with the religions (not just Christian) who do what they do in the name of god. He is not just their talisman AA, he is their excuse for being inhumane.

  3. The Atheist Advocate Says:

    Phil,
You are mostly correct. I agree to a point. Hell, I’m an atheist, it’s my duty to dislike religion! 🙂

I guess I’m just not comfortable with Bert saying “… every single bit…” of negativity that mankind suffers from is perpetuated by religion. There is politics, money, power. Humans have done negative things for many reasons and have stopped progress to perpetuate their own agendas.

Religion tops the list, but as I look around the world, I can see many pushes against progress not caused by religion.

    On a different note:
Something that irritates me to no end is the athlete who blesses himself before entering the arena, hoping that god will be with him and help him destroy his opponent. When there is genocide and starving children in the Sudan who need the help of a god, who is never there. How arrogant of the athlete to think a god would help in his endevour, as a priority to the other sufferings in this world! I would transfer this thought process to every person praying over their food or praying for this or that in material goods. How arrogant of you! Stop praying and get off your ass. God won’t do it! Humans have the power to do it! Help unfortunate people.

Now, as I step down from the soap box…
Ah yes, I feel much better now!!!
