The people that like to say an atheist is militant usually mean one that simply is willing to discuss his/her reasons for being so. For many, the very idea that there is no god is a radical and dangerous position. Do we say that people with various religious bumper stickers on their cars are "militant christians"? The people that bomb churches and abortion clinics are invariably religious and yet pointing out the shallowness and in indefensibility somehow makes ME the nut.

I have found that being extremely polite, while pointing out the obvious advantages to atheism goes a lot further than hostility. Examples, the ability to think for myself, no god required; The freedom to look at all sides of an issue, without the "canned" religious responses to tie me down, no god required. I recommend being every bit as polite as many clergy when discussing the validity of a higher power. It certainly takes them off guard ...and hopefully gets them thinking that atheists are nice people too. We "help thy neighbor" without the need of a higher power to instruct us.

I consider myself an "Antitheist" since I not only dismiss all gods as fairytale, as other atheists do, but I go one step further, in that I believe religion is dangerous and I do whatever I can to thwart it. In essence, I guess the uneducated could call me militant, though I have never heard of an atheist suicide bomber!
Yeah, I think I'll stick with "Antitheist!" That's the style of atheism I practice.

Six colleagues from work sat around a table in a pub on Monday. Someone makes a comment about having to go to a church on Saturday for a wedding (nothing like a church to ruin a good wedding). As it happens everyone at the table was either an atheist or agnostic.
My colleague turns to me if I was an atheist. "Yes", I replied. "Militantly so".
Arrggghhhhhh - why did I say that? Did I mean ... "I'm more of an atheist than you!"
I wish I'd never heard of the term and will solemnly swear never to use it again.
