“There is no need for us to gather every day, or every seven days, or on any high and auspicious day, to proclaim our rectitude or to grovel and wallow in our unworthiness. We atheists do not require any priests, or any hierarchy above them, to police our doctrine.”

Remember in “300” when that creepy disgusting old priest says to King Leonidas, “Trust in the gods…”? King Leonidas looked at him like WTF and replied, “I’d prefer you trusted your reason” (paraphrase). This quote reminds me of that scene. A prudent man measures value in terms of reason, not mystical authority. Your thoughts?

This is the rejoinder to “Without God, anything is permissible”. I think that most people, regardless of religious leanings, know that it is simply untrue that without religion we’d spend every waking moment killing, stealing from and raping one another.

It’s my sincere hope that the actual number of people that believe such obvious tosh are very very few and living in towns other than my own.
