26th October 2009

“For the better part of the 20th century, the nations of Western Europe led the way in the abandonment of Christian commitments. Christian moral reflexes and moral principles gave way to the loosening grip of a Christian memory. Now even that Christian memory is absent from the lives of millions.”

What about America? For half of the 20th centuy, when the power of Christian families held sway, there were young children working in mines and mills, women had no Vote in affairs affecting their lives, there was severe racial segragation, active anti-Semitism, lynchings in the South, police turning a blind eye to women and children savagely beaten in “domestic disturbances”. I’d say it’s a good thig that “Christian memory” is absent from the lives of millions !
