“All religions, with their gods, demigods, prophets, messiahs and saints, are the product of the fancy and credulity of men who have not yet reached the full development and complete possession of their intellectual powers.”

Well, I could understand the perspective in terms of “fancy and credulity” but from there it is just an insult and does nothing to engage a closed mind – rather, it illuminates a closed minded position on the part of Bakunin…

  2. John Says:

With religion, do not the religious believe that the human species is the center of the know universe? Then death must be the final big let down for them; by then though it is far to late to start anew ones life.

  3. Chris Says:

While the description of the theist’s intellectual powers as incomplete is unquestionably insulting to the believer, I think there’s a broad and defensible point being made. Can such a one, able to make rational decisions, using the technological and medical advances we’ve achieved, applying sound reasoning most of the time and yet not able to apply that rationality and reasoning to an examination of his faith be considered to have reached the potential of his intellectual powers? I think not.

I don’t like to see the words intelligence and intellect banded around in atheist arguments. It makes atheists sound arrogant by claiming “You believe in God because you are not intelligent enough to know any better”.
Not believing in the supernatural comes down to simple common sense.

  5. holysmokes Says:

    Well put PEB!

  6. The Heretic Says:

And…what is the use of intellect without common sense? Nothing like an intellectually brilliant nitwit. And we have all met at least one.

…and to whom was Bakunin addressing himself?

    ID is short for IDiot

The non-existence of any “intelligent designer” is established by the existence of those who can believe in one.
