Um…Ms. Rumpler? Atheism doesn’t have beliefs. It only has unbelief – and only one of those. Sub in “humanism” or some other actual system of beliefs and maybe you rescue the quote.

YES ,BUT WE MUST ALWAY`S MAKE A CONSCIOUS EFFORT TO KEEP THAT POWER AT A MINIMUM AS ULTIMATE POWER CORRUPT`S . I WOULD SUGGEST TO STAY POWER AND REPLACE IT WITH INNER STRENGTH ,A MORE PRONOUNCED INDIVIDUAL INTEGRITY WOULD BE OF MORE BENIFIT TO MANKIND ,,AN ALIEN`S POINT OF VIEW

For the atheist its is definitely JUST A FEELING. I know GOD is in CONTROL of mine.GODS got everything under his control whether the atheist like it or not.Believe it or not hes still in control.

Its not really a feeling of giving a sense of power. Its just a feeling of doubt that the Atheist always KIV.

Atheism is when you have no sexually perverted and mentally ill men standing over you telling you not to live your life contrary to his wishes whilst the afore mentioned; are living his life in all the ways he is telling you not. Some very lonely and scared humans’ those religious followers tend to be with there need for bullying, make believe and control.
I like the quote’s basic theme as a suggestion of hope for the human species.

Hmmm. I understand what this is trying to say, but is misses the mark on several levels. As the Captain says atheism doesn’t have “beliefs” it is only the lack of belief sans evidence to the contrary that gods exist.
The quote tends to assume that atheism has associated beliefs that are common to all atheists which is not true. What can be implied from the quote, and I would agree, is that freedom from religion is empowering. But characterising it as a belief system of itself is not helpful.

If you break it down:
* I love the beliefs of Atheism – yuk, please don’t combine these words.
* because it gives you a sense of power – err, no actually it doesn’t. There are many benefits but feeling powerful isn’t one of them. “Humbling” might be one – the odds on our existence are remarkable.
* It makes you feel like you’re in control of your entire life. Again, that’s not true. I spend 99.9% of my life not thinking about atheism so it doesn’t make me feel in control of anything. It does however mean I have plenty of free time on a Sunday.
It sounds like Lauren Rumpler is describing a religion.

It sounds like a liar against a liar.

Although I understand the premise behind this quote, it does a poor job of trying to explain atheism. I’d prefer that it read something as simple as; “Atheism gives me a sense of freedom.” I am not sure about the “control over your life” part either. Heck, I seldom ever feel in control. Maybe I should take the check book away from the the little woman. lol

Aw crap. Your birthday comes once a year, you’d think I could sleep in a little the next day, but no, AMC says what I wanted to say.
And, he says it better than I had.
So, hit the delete key an try again.
This quote is wrong on several levels. I also would prefer: “Atheism can set you free; free to realize that you always have had the power to control your own life.”
But then I read the rest of AMC’s line, now I gotta add: “…and the responsibility for doing so as well.”
I am going to get more coffee. Maybe I will do better later. Carry on, ladies and gents!

One should never feel fully in control of one’s life. If one does, they are delusional and should be avoided at all costs. The unpredictability of nature / life is what makes things interesting.

The only hope that ever was and ever will be for human race John,is Jesus Christ.

Of course, there are things that happen that are beyond your control, but the atheist’s lack of superstition frees them from some of the larger logical fallacies of life. Those fallacies that would inhibit your influence on your own existence, like religions of all kinds.
Use a car as an analogy. You cannot control the road conditions, the traffic, the weather, but you are the driver. You can control the speed, the driving, storing, upkeep and maintenance, even lengthening the life span of the car.
Sooner or later the car, like our bodies, wears out.
Superstitions like Jesus, Mo, or Shiva are little more than car-jackers!

It appears that the atheists on this site, (or at least the ones who posted so far today), are in agreement regarding this quote. Miss Lauren Rumpler, if you are watching, it appears that you may be attempting to turn atheism into a religion all it’s own. If that was not your intention, then you might consider rewording, or explaining your quote.
March 2nd, 2010 at 18:11
Or perhaps there is a context that will make it more useful.
Otherwise, I agree with HSmokes.

You’re probably all going to go “Well, Duh!” to this, but since it is a slow day quote-wise, have any of you missed out on the comic strip Jesus and Mo?

Absolutely hilarious. Whoever writes this thing has got his or her finger on the pulse.

I agree with all of you on this one – this quote horribly overstates the atheist position re: belief.
I think it’s dangerous to equate atheism with a “system of belief” for a number of reasons. Primarily because it’s a false statement to begin with, but also because it implies adherence to dogma and, perhaps to some extent, a political agenda and/or quest for power.
I can’t speak for the rest of you, but all I want is freedom from religious dogma and religiously-driven political agendas and power in the public sphere.
I’m all for letting religious people masturbate each spiritually in private as much as they want – non of my business. Just don’t bring it out in the open. God-goo is difficult to get out of the furniture…

Thanks for the graphics. It can even get on the computer screen.
Yes, it certainly is hard to rid ourselves of dribbling god-goo.
But, it is sure worth it!
