“The problem of religious belief is that, once you have accepted a set of propositions unsupported by logic, evidence or rational analysis, you are then capable of believing anything without submitting it to rational consideration.”

    I googled:
“scammer targets religious” = 557,000 hits
“scammer targets christians” = 458,000 hits
“scammer targets atheists” = 69,200 hits

I was surprised at the last. A scan of the top results pertaining to atheists seen to be of two flavors: Atheists talking about religious being targets of scams and atheist web sites attacked by (presumably) religious hackers.

I know this is very superficial (before you point it out, Oxy) but I think there is support for the quote’s assertion that the mental habits of religion disable the protective armor of healthy skepticism.

  3. GoodWithoutGod Says:

Not totally convinced of this. If you are Christian would you readily accept the propositions put forth by Scientology? The Flying Spaghetti Monster? They’re both equally illogical when compared to Christianity, but we cannot ignore the social acceptance of the Christian delusion as part of this equation. It’s easier to belong because more people are involved in the delusion. It doesn’t mean you can’t think critically about other nonsense – you simply choose to ignore the nonsense you’ve submerged yourself in.

I think the problem lies more with how people are raised. If you teach children to critically examine the world – question everything – then they will be less gullible. Providing children with a good BS Detection Kit will help them sniff out the good from the bad.

  4. solomon Says:

The Atheists are confusing themselves by finding other silly complicated reasons just to run away from the simplest refutable doctrine of creationism.

  5. Atheist MC Says:

I don’t think my experience of religious people bears out this quote. Religion is surprisingly easy to ring fence as different to the practicalities of life. In fact I am often surprised when I find that otherwise rational and sceptical people turn out to be religious.

  6. solomon Says:

No matter what lies you all say about religion, you all still can’t provide fossil proofs of the gradual transformation of ape to men which proofs that evolution is a Hoax! Na…..na na na na…

  7. Holysmokes Says:

I’m inclined to agree with GWG and AMC.

I wonder, if we were to tell 100 children that Santa does exist, but never correct that myth, how many of them would still believe when entering adulthood?

The trick to making people believe is to get them early and keep the pressure on by telling them corroborating stories that are half believable. Enter the clergy.

Example; Jesus died for our sins on the cross. Not logical, but if you embed that story early enough, it will stick. Let’s never mind the fact that a super being would not need to put his son through such a thing in the first place. Let’s ignore that Jesus could supposedly perform miracles, but didn’t seem able to save himself, despite his super dad. It’s like fortune tellers who never seem to win the lottery. Let’s ignore that Jesus death had nothing to do with the mistakes I have made, or will make. Let’s ignore the poor soles who lived prior to him. Let’s ignore the 100s of millions of people who never heard of him over the years. I guess they are screwed. The goes on, but the point is obvious. It simply makes no sense in any language.

Captain, I think everyone is gullible. It would appear the reason for the numbers difference in your Google research is because there are many more believers on the world compared the Atheists. I suspect you will find the data is proportional.

Solomon, when do you celebrate your 13th birthday?

  8. Holysmokes Says:

    Solomon,

AL fossils are transitional. If you doubt that, take a look in the mirror and ask yourself if you look EXACTLY like both of your fathers?

  9. solomon Says:

By saying transitional there should be a marked or significant transition from ape to men!Do you get it!

  10. Holysmokes Says:

How many times must you be told? Men did not evolve from apes. Apes and men evolved from a common ancester. That is a huge difference. What part of that don’t you get?

  11. Holysmokes Says:

To be ignorant of information is acceptable until taught. To continually refute millions of pieces of evolutionary science after being shown the evidence is just plain stupid. Which of these categories do you fall under Solomon?

  12. Holysmokes Says:

Solomon, for the last time read this. If the words confuse you, don’t be afraid to ask for help. http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/comdesc/

  13. solomon Says:

Now they try to tell a different story.LIARS

  14. solomon Says:

Men did not evolve from apes. Apes and men evolved from a common ancester. If you say so what is mens and apes common ancestors?

  15. John Says:

Why waste your words on an idiot? That preacher solomon, if standing in front of you at this very minute would shoot you in the head with his AK-47 and then hoot like a Gorilla to his peaceful cults glory.

  16. solomon Says:

Before you answer my question, provide fossil proofs of the gradual transformation of “common ancestors” to men AND “common ancestors” to apes.
    Whaaaa….ka ka ka ka

  17. CaptainZero1969 Says:

Holy – I noticed the surface proportionality as well. Thats why I began looking at the content. Lots of stories of the religious being targeted and bilked. None on the other side. Have you ever heard of a scam targeting skeptics? I haven’t.

As Allen Henderson says in his book, “How Con Games Work”, religious people are prime targets for scams. Scammers take advantage of religious people’s capacity for blind faith and their trust in the authority of their clergy. They know that all they have to do is to get the community’s local religious leader scammed, and they have it made:

“Ironically, the very qualities that distinguish [Mormons] as fine, upstanding citizens proceed to be their financial downfall at the hands of con artists. Because they were religious, law-abiding and community- and church-oriented, they tended to be sheltered and trusting… if the preacher [who was scammed] said yea, who were they to say nay?”

  18. CaptainZero1969 Says:

I know it’s pointless but what the hell…

Sol, I give you ancestral candidate: Nakalipithicus.

It’s very hard or possibly impossible to nail it down to a single point. The species keep changing, you see. But this creature was very close to the split if not the split itself.

I’m curious. How do the religious account for the fact that Earth has a fossil record millions of years long but Homo Sapiens Sapiens only has a fossil record of .2 million years?

What happens in church, stays in church? Interesting peice on the correlation between religious and political affiliation:

  20. Holysmokes Says:

    Solomon,

As I have pointed out multiple times before. Science never PROVES anything. Science looks at the available evidence, formulates ideas, hypothesis and then theories via experiments and observations. Theories are the accumulation of large amounts of evidence all of which have been successfully falsified, or tested by other valid experiments. The idea/hypothesis/theory must also be repeatable by others. Even GRAVITY has never been PROVEN. It has simply never been observed not to occur when the law says it should. Only when considering the massive preponderance of evidence, did it become a law of nature. Should a valid exception to gravity ever become known, it would destroy that law. The same exact thing can be said for every theory, including evolution.

Instead of blowing off what I said, how about taking some time to look up just what science is all about and understanding its attributes and limitations? You might learn something. Your constant and immediate reaction to dismiss a comment every time someone attempts to explain something to you is the primary reason you are not taken seriously. Stop acting like an immature kid and try to learn something. You can start by removing the word PROVE and all it’s variations from any discussion in this forum. Science isn’t in the business of proving anything.

Now regarding your transitional fossils. I am surprised that you haven’t bothered to check into this yourself, especially considering the mass of information on the internet. Incidentally, the comment I made about ALL fossils being transitional is valid. All creatures are in a constant state of change, including today. This is a fact as shown by thousands of peer reviewed scientific papers. If you want to start looking into them, begin here. http://www.genetics.org/ You will find countless peer-reviewed research papers on all sorts of biological topics.

I will give you a day or two to look into transitional fossils ON YOUR OWN via the internet. If you cannot locate any valid data, let me know.

  21. Holysmokes Says:

    Solomon,

Oh and one more thing. the ONLY thing science is looking for is the truth. Not what you, I or anyone else wants it to be. No wishful thinking, nor does science have any vested interest in trying to eliminate your god. If that happens as a result of the data, then so be it. Truth and only the truth. Keep that in mind when you make your replies.

  22. Atheist MC Says:

I will give you a day or two to look into transitional fossils

Missed a trick there ‘smokes. Should have given him a month, Oh the peace…

  23. solomon Says:

    Dear Holysmokes,

Now you have admit that science could not provide the ultimate unser to anything.Thats why we have to turn to god or the Qoran which is the source of ultimate truth.I appreciate what science have discovered but human could not grasp the ultimate truth of things even they are given billions of years researching them. All the while that is said in the Qoran, the past the future, science, biology or whatever have been proven true.So one should start from the Qoran and fid the proof what is stored in it.

  24. John Says:

    Dog piss – old solomon…

  25. Holysmokes Says:

    Soloman,
Ahhh, there’s that word PROOF again. I guess you will never understand.

  26. solomon Says:

That word PROOF is what always human strive for.Why do you want to scrap that word.Is it to your advANTAGE?

    For John,
    Have you lost the argument?
