“Nothing physical which sense-experience sets before our eyes, or which necessary demonstrations prove to us, ought to be called into question (much less condemned) upon the testimony of biblical passages.”

I guess this is why Galileo was put on trial. When Stephen Hawking was invited to the Vatican he was asked if there was anything he particularly was interested in seeing while there. He did – the transcripts from Galileo’s trial.

The part of the quote that I find most remarkable is that not only should proven facts not be called into question, but that they ought not be condemned.
Calling things into question, well, I have no problems with that, but condemnation? Who is trying to strongarm who?
The continued condemnation of fact by the superstitious is truly a remarkably odd behavior that I hope is unique to the human species.
As AMC points out, we are still seeing idiots pop out fanciful notions like the ‘creation museum’. At some point, we as a culture ought to start recognizing and clearly labeling superstition. There are too many idiots who cannot see what is before them, and need a warning label.

Or that you can be” saved from anything” ‘because some stinky, smelly, nasty, dirty old pedophile in dress or the followers of a documented pedophile in a dress from the Dark Ages says some kind of voodoo magic words over you; at you or to themselves in some old kind of warn-out old tired magical cant.

I have found very little on the context of this quote. Somehow, I doubt it was said in the presence of the church. It would be interesting to know.
