“In the last few years secular liberals have been uncompromising in what they say about religion, and the targets of their criticism have squealed and complained as loudly as if they felt real flames licking round their feet. The churches answered criticism in the past with murder; if they still had the upper hand would they now restrict themselves to their critics’ choice of weapon – words?”

There are a number of religions and sects within religions which advocate far more than mere words. From Xians who advocate the murder of atheists to islamics who advocate the killing of all non-islamics, we are not yet completely out of the dark ages.

This question is absurd. You only have to look as far as Islam to see that they advocate murder for “infidels”. I have no doubt that many Christians would do the same if they had the same power.
