“Jews, Muslims, Christians and atheists are generally moral people. But that's not because they're Jews, Muslims, Christians or atheist. It's because they're people.”

Generally speaking, that’s true. But I know a lot of Christians (in particular) who aren’t very good people.

  2. CaptainZero Says:

And, there seem to be a great many religionists that use their religion as justification for bad behavior. I don’t know of a case when someone uses their atheism as a justification for bad behavior. I’m sure it happens, people being people, but it seems rare.

  3. Jeff Says:

Once more, when the subject of morality and atheism comes up, I have to recommend Robert Wright’s “The Moral Animal” as both a primer on evolutionary psychology, and a good foundation in how morality evolved in man.

In addition, I strongly recommend Julian Jaynes’ “The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind”. A long title, but I believe it will go down as the seminal work in this fascinating field. BTW, it can also serve as a good answer to yesterdays’ question of the day for Solly, what is the one true religion – according to Jaynes, it’s the one inside your own head.

  4. Sinjin Smythe Says:

I gave a presentation in the Philosophy class once where I hypothesized a Pandora’s box that contained irrefutable proof beyond any possibility of doubt. That I opened the box and showed the class. I then asked the class “How would this change your life?”.

An Irish Catholic man spoke up first and said I could “sure bet he’d be coveting his neighbor’s wife”. A muslim man said without the Koran there would be nothing preventing him from just killing people.

I said that one of the things about being an atheist is that I have no impulse to covet my neighbors wife or kill anyone. That it is sad to think that anyone would need a “10 comandments” to prevent this obviously poor choice in behavior.

I mean wouldn’t it make you feel sub-human to be unable to identify the obvious? To need or depend upon something other than your own common sense in these matters?

It really is the very most damning thing of religion to think you are so stupid that you would actually need someone to tell you not to rape or murder.

  5. Sinjin Smythe Says:

Where doubt or a doubt·er is defined:

    doubters, plural

1.A person who questions or lacks faith in something; a skeptic

  6. solomon Says:

I don’t agree with the quote. Do moral people commit such a heinous act such as homosexuality? Only the true religion posses honest morals.

  7. r j Says:

thanks for the book tip…………will obtain them asap

  8. r j Says:

good to see the resident know-it-all

is ever vigilant with you pesky atheists !!!

gotta tell ya………..it’s a load off my

mind to know there aint no homos in the

    ONE-TWO RELIGION !!!!!!!!!!

  9. Sinjin Smythe Says:

@solomon ~ Heinous means hateful or shockingly evil. A grossly wicked or reprehensible action is called heinous act. The term is mostly used to refer to crimes. For example, heinous murder.

Homosexuality is defined as “a sexual attraction to (or sexual relations with) persons of the same sex”

You can’t be morally honest and also redefine to suit your worldview the meanings of words.

I can accept that you are turned off by the thought of homosexual acts, I kind of find them about as revolting as stepping barefoot in fresh dog crap, but it isn’t fair for you or me to apply our revulsion to homosexuality upon other people.

  10. Dan Says:

How is homosexuality “heinous”? And which religion is the “true” religion?

  11. Sinjin Smythe Says:

Oh and another thought: The psycho religionists that carry the “God hates fags’ signs at military funerals and such.

These people may very well be the “duped by the anti-Christ” people described in Revelation.

You see the Christian God is supposed to be all about LOVE, not hate. It appears these whackos have been duped by Satan into blasphemy against God.

Ergo, anyone who says that God hates anyone is actually a child of Satan and a blasphemer.

That’s you solomon, you are a blasphemer and it is patently obvious that you hate god.

  12. Jeff Says:

Which puts Solly in the wrong place – atheists don’t hate god, we just don’t accept his/her/its existence. Since he actually hates god, does anyone know of a good chat room for Satanists to which we can refer Solly?

  13. Jeff Says:

BTW, R J, you seem to have ruled out Christianity as Solly’s belief base, as that would be the ONE-TWO-THREE GODS IN ONE religion.

  14. R j Says:

    YOU’RE RIGHT !!!!!!!
    YOU’RE RIGHT !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Sinjin Smythe Says:

It is funny that some people like Rj and Jeff can get it so quickly and easily and then dipsticks like solly are trapped in a heavy fog.

Neanderthal man is said to have actually been able to speak and converse with homo sapiens in addition to mating with humans.

I think this serves to show that there wasn’t just a human born to an ape as solly might suggest but rather a whole range of evolutionary stages in between the ape and human ie. Neandethals, homo erectus, habilis, et cetera.

I wonder how the Neanderthals might have felt as they realized they weren’t competing with humans, or were having trouble keeping up. I mean of course if these relatively low IQ types could even ponder the questions.

Then I think of solly and how his nervous fear based non-sense reads between the lines.

  16. R J Says:

i think that idea of yours…….about what the neanderthals

felt as they realized their coming demise……is a VERY

interesting thing to ponder…………and i also think it

might have real possibilities as a film !!!

And (( just for myself )) i like thinking about how cool it

would have been to date a neanderthal honey !!!!

oh, the fantasies run wild !!!!!

  17. electrabotanical Says:

Neanderthals had larger brains than homo Sapiens. Whether it was to keep their noggins warmer in cold climes or if is conferred higher intelligence, we don’t know yet.

  18. Sinjin Smythe Says:

    electrabotanical Says: “conferred higher intelligence”

No argument here in some sort of scientific measurable conclusion but it is at least clear that Neanderthal didn’t adapt particularly well, at least by human standards. I can’t think of no scientist that would say any species has been as successful as humans. That has to account for something.

I mean some would consider Al Capone as particularly crafty but it is often reported that his IQ was 92.

Also Hitler is frequently noted for his intellect but it is obvious that he wasn’t particularly gifted at self preservation.

So given Neanderthals record of success probably points to keeping the noggin warmer before anything else.

  19. Sinjin Smythe Says:

R j the movie is waiting for you:

Daryl Hannah as a young Cro-Magnon woman is raised by Neanderthals

The Clan of the Cave Bear

  20. R J Says:

    thanks thanks thanks …………………

i’m certain i can get it on one of the internet movie

outlets !!! i’d heard of it but i’ve neither read the book,

or seen the film. !!!! so, i’ll watch it this weekend.

    thanks thanks thanks !!

  21. Sinjin Smythe Says:

Cro-magno erotica? Did we just coin a new term?

  22. Sinjin Smythe Says:

File this under “benefits of Neanderthal-erotica?”
Neanderthal sex boosted immunity in modern humans

  23. CaptainZero Says:

Why are religious people so obsessed with homosexuality? I don’t think the issue would come up much on this forum but for our religious troll bringing it up incessantly. Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt.

  24. R J Says:

    cro-magnon EROTICA ???????????

sinjin, you just keep getting more wonderful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. solomon Says:

Coz homosexuality is a heinous, despicable useless act. So much so Sinjin & R J are chatting rubbish, at the end of the day they will be burned in !!HHHHEEEELLLL!!

  26. R J Says:

sounds like old clueless had a grumpy pill today !!!!

  27. Dan Says:

Coz homosexuality is a heinous, despicable useless act.

Yes, but can you explain HOW or WHY it is heinous or despicable. Because I think you’re full of sh*t, but I’m trying to give you a chance to explain your views.

Sheesh. Just try and answer a simple question for once, would you???
