25th September 2011

“The Decalogue includes a man's wife among his possessions… all her life she remains a minor. The wife does not inherit from her husband, nor daughters from their father, except when there is no male heir. A vow made by a girl or married woman needs, to be valid, the consent of the father or husband and if this consent is withheld, the vow is null and void. A man had a right to sell his daughter. Women were excluded from the succession.”

this lovely quote contains 7 MORE reasons why

humans are the most screwed up creatures

    on the planet.

No wonder why they want to keep the 8th century alive and flourishing…

Screwed up is right. And we should not forget that is often women who think religion is wonderful. I dread to think what would happen to me if I treated Mrs and Miss archaeopteryx like this!

In this morning’s Sunday Globe Ideas section is an article about violence and Steven Pinker’s new book “Better Angels”.

In the book Pinker examines the history of violence with some perhaps surprising observations. Most striking is that we are living in the most peaceful time in history.

Pinker credits developments in reason, science, literacy, democracy, open economies, and the empowerment of women as the contributing factors to humans learning to live better with each other.

Pinker credits the Enlightenment more than anything with the positive change: secularism, reason, science, and individual rights.

That while the theocrats argue for a simpler time where people were untied by religion, tradition, and moral clarity the reality is that time never existed.

The Better Angels it turns out are science, reason, and secularism. The inner demons then are what we have thought they were: religion, violence, aggression, depravity, and nihilism.

I’ll be adding “Better Angels” to my reading list, I’m betting Solomon will not. I’m sure he will find all he needs in another book, one written long ago when people ruthlessly murdered in the name of God all the freakin time.

I have daughters and they aren’t for sale, they will decide who they marry, they will go to school, they will have everything I can give them if it promotes their opportunities.

Filthy types like Jesus and Mohammed can take their childish ideas about women and stick them up their rears.

We’d be better off and far more peaceful still if we had a council of grandmothers in the highest realms of governement.
