“People look at the content of their religious tradition – its teachings, its creeds, its prophet's proclamations – and they basically pick and choose what suits their own secular outlook. They see in their faith what they want to see as they live their daily lives, and simultaneously ignore the rest.”

Sounds hypocritical to me. You are either all in – or not. Else, what is the point?

I have a cousin who does this. We had an in-depth discussion one night and she explained how none of the crazy stuff in the bible mattered because it was a book written by men trying to explain stuff they didn’t have knowledge of back then. Here is the tricky part… I told her that she still had to buy into it all for it to work (meaning christianity) She disagreed saying all I had to do was to believe in jesus as the son of god/savior and poof – eternal salvation – no other thing was required. I pointed out that she had just invented her own religion and the rules to it – yet kept the main character the same. It just feels right.. she said. These intelligent people have a huge flaw when it comes to logic and reason and their need of god.

i think the flaw you cite is actually a fear of death.

religion says ” dont worry…..you dont really die…

you just go to a BETTER PLACE and live on forever !!! ”

well, if you dont buy that does death loom any larger???

just another fairy tale the faithful cling to for comfort

Just have faith they say —-

    and stop that thinking feeling.

You are right about them wanting to believe that you “live forever”. That just begs the question – what are you doing forever? Singing crappy praise songs? Floating around bumping into each other in your spriritual body, or are you busy smiling down,(as is always the case) watching everyone cry at your funeral? Who wants to do that forever? Why is that thought comforting to people? If I beleived that were true it would be terrifying. It is actually comforting to know that once we die, the only chance of continuance is through the living DNA we leave behind.

  6. R J Says:

why is ” continuance ‘ important at all ???

  7. Kittie Aldakkour Says:

I don’t believe I mentioned importance at all. It is a better proposition for me that once we die – that is it. the end. blackness. I was just acknowledging the fact that our descendants are a form of continuance – as shown from the mitochondrial DNA connections that are traced back to the earliest humans. Thats all.
